Spring Wreath Tutorial!

Hello Friends!! Long time no see! :) We've had some MAJOR life changes since my last posts, so I'm here and ready to catch you up!

My husband got out of the Army in April 2017, studied his little heart out and passed a series of exams to get some IT certifications and progress through a veterans program with Cisco Systems. He accepted a position at their office in the Dallas area and in July 2017 we sold our home in North Carolina and moved halfway across the country! We settled in a suburb north of Dallas and absolutely LOVE it here!!

Kiddo has been busy with Cub Scouts, taekwondo, and baseball as well as playing with new friends and spending every free moment at the pool (in the spring/summer months).

Work and being a taxi driver (to shuttle kiddo from activity to activity) has kept me busy, along with unpacking the house and getting us settled in. We are currently just renting, so we don't have a lot of DIY house projects right now, but if all goes as planned, we will be buying a home in another year or two (which will surely bring SO many new projects for me to share with you!). I'm slowly getting back to working on my Etsy shop now that life is settling down again, so be on the lookout for an opening announcement and sale in the coming months!

It's not even June yet, but it already feels like summer here in Dallas (temps are in the 90's, ugh), and I've got a tutorial for you today on how to make a fun wreath for your door! I made mine light and bright for spring and summer, but you can easily change the colors to make it suitable for any season! Let's get to it!

What you will need:

  • Grapevine wreath (choose a size that fits your door size)
  • Flowers (I used hydrangea's)
  • Wooden letter (your last initial)
  • Paint & Brush
  • Hot glue or floral wire (to attach everything to the wreath)

Your first step is to paint the wooden letter, because obviously this needs time to dry. I ended up doing 2 coats to make sure the color was solid and not streaky. I painted both sides of the letter just to be on the safe side, but that's not totally necessary, just the front will do if you are short on time or paint!

While the letter was drying, I started positioning and attaching my flowers. First I pulled all of the leaves off the stems and set those aside.

Then I cut the flower stems so they were each about 5-6 inches long.

Next I just started putting the stems through the vines of the wreath, moving them around until I was happy with how the flowers looked. Once they were in place, I bent the flower stems around the vines to hold them in place. You could use hot glue if your stems don't have wire in them, but mine did and bending them was enough to keep them securely in place.

Next I played around with the leaves that I had leftover from the flower stems, but ultimately decided to leave them off and keep it simple. I have another wreath with hydrangeas that has the leaves on it (which looks super cute), so I thought I'd leave them off this one.

Once the letter was dry, I found the spot I wanted it to go in, and hot glued it on to the wreath. It took me awhile to decide the placement, but move it around and see how you like it in different spots on the wreath.

And that's it! How cute is this wreath? Simple, but bright and spring-like! I love how the blues and greens I chose really make it pop against our black door.

Let me know if you make one and what colors and flowers you used!! I love seeing creations from other people to see how everyone puts their own spin on a project!

Happy crafting!
